What I Did: Concept Development, Photography, Creative Direction, Analog Drawing, Digital Drawing, 3D Modeling, Printmaking
The Purpose
To develop a visual language inspired by chairs.

A project with many twists and turns that began with a chairs photography project and evolved into a visual language. This project plays at the intersection of analog and digital and explores shape and form through posters, motion, 3D modeling, sculpture, drawing, photography, printmaking, and lithography.

The Thinking
In how many directions can I push this particular archive of photos? What is the relationship between analog and digital and how do visual languages evolve from a product or physical object? This project explores our relationship with visual language which as designers we must consider throughout the design process and beyond. How can we communicate visually a feeling, or how can we translate an illustration from a 3D object?
The Outcome
Chairception evolved over weeks. It began with the development of a database: photos of chairs that I sat in over a 2-week period. The photo archive grew into illustrations and line drawings, into posters, into a visual language inspired by the geometry and curvatures of seating. It transformed from analog to digital and back again. Through 3D renderings, printmaking, analog drawing, and motion design. I share this project because it provides a look into my thinking and my design process.
This project was developed under the mentorship of Professor Anton Ginzburg.

Phase I
Sometime ago, I spent time photographing chairs that I encountered and that I sat in throughout New York. The reason for chairs is a longer story that I’m happy to talk about over a coffee. I researched the history of chairs, the design, and tried to answer various questions of mine. As I looked over my growing database, I started noticing the curves, lines, and shapes of chairs, their geometry that create ergonomics. I’ve continued to document chairs and so this database is far from complete. It’s merely a starting point, perhaps an inspiration to know and research more in the spirit of seating and chairs. That said, what you’ll find here is a study that evolved into a playful visual language of seating and all that evolved from that, from transforming and creating new chairs to exploring the abstract curves and shapes separately.

All in the spirit of seating.

Phase II
A progression from part 1, this series explores geometry and space while integrating color and finding playfulness in seating that isn't for sitting.

Phase III
In the final progression of this project, I experimented with creating animations of my 3D modeled works. What drew me to this seating were the geometries, shapes, colors, sizes, the ergonomics. What would happen if I took them a part and put them back together? Future progressions of my work on this project includes building as sculptures with raw materials.
